Game of the Year?
So pretty much every major release planned for this year is out.
And that got me thinking: What's my game of the year for 2011?
Here's what I've played, from this year's releases:
-Dead Space 2
-Homefront
-The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
-Portal 2
-Outland
-The Baconing
-Battlefield 3
-The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
From this, I'm putting my 3 favorite, in no particular order:
-Portal 2
-The Witcher 2
-TES V: Skyrim
All fantastic titles that are well-worth the purchase price. I can't decide on GOTY between them. Woo.
Now, how 'bout you, fellow horsemen of the SoFpocalypse?

My absolute favorite this year is The Witcher 2. I should really finish that 4th playthrough

Re: Game of the Year?
The only big 2011 releases that I've played:
Battlefield 3
Dead Island
Killzone 3
LA Noire
Portal 2
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Gran Turismo 5
Dungeon Defenders
Outland
Not much since I became broke right after BF3 hit and couldnt buy Skyrim or Uncharted 3. From what I've seen those two would easily get 2 spots in my top 3 if I had played them.
If I had to pick a top 3 from that it'd probably be:
Battlefield 3
Portal 2
Deus Ex Human Revolution
With an honorable mention to Dungeon Defenders as the best PSN game of all time.

Re: Game of the Year?
You know Modern Warfare 3 will win this... not because its good... but because everyone under the sun but us has it.. :/
Edit: Hell... even though I am not going to play it or even open it, even I technically have it... until it goes back to Best Buy on Tuesday to get possibly traded in for Skyrim lol

I have a feeling I'm gonna have a duel between Dark Souls and Skyrim on who gets game of the year. I think Skyrim will take it even though Dark Souls was badass
other games I've played:
Battlefield 3
L.A Noire
Portal 2
and...uhmm I don't remember anything else, what's come out this year? lol
Edit: oh Mortal Kombat too!

Re: Game of the Year?
To me, a game without multiplayer can never be GOTY.
I did enjoy Oblivion and Fallout 3 for example, but they were nowhere near as fun as BC2 MP with friends. Playing against unpredictable human opponents, with friends, beats everything in my book.
I also have a sinking feeling that if BF3 isn't well received among SoFAnites then our community itself might start to fall apart. BC2 was after all what brought us all together and kept the topics rolling in. If everyone justs sits around playing SP games there's less of an incentive to keep coming back here.

Re: Game of the Year?
My top 3:
1-The Witcher 2. Fantastic game and one of the best RPGs I've ever played. Great story, amazing graphics and wonderful soundtrack.
2-Red Orchestra 2: The most visceral FPS I've seen. The best shooting mechanics in an FPS (close with Counter Strike), coupled with fantastic maps, very demanding gameplay and excellent developer support. In a very packed market of FPSs, Red Orchestra 2 is the under dog that punches well above its weight.
3-Deus Ex Human Revolution: It reminds me hugely of Deus Ex, the greatest game ever made. Enough said.
Of course I have to try Skyrim as well.

MY GOTY NOMINEES:
Warhammer 40k: Retribution
The Witcher 2
Skyrim
Dirt 3
Battlefield 3
as engaging and epic as Skyrim is, i'm going to have to give the edge to The Witcher 2.

Re: Game of the Year?
What I played this year:
LA Noire
Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat 9
RAGE
Dungeon Defenders
Battlefield 3
Hmm........Battlefield 3 kinda wins by default since while I may enjoy the other games listed, I don't think any of them are stellar. Battlefield 3 will be pretty close to that once the voice chat issues are fixed.

Re: Game of the Year?
Battlefield 3, as much as it is a good game, doesn't have the staying power my other 3 games do. I can ultimately see something being released that would improve upon BF3 enough so that I'd give it up.
Portal 2 was brilliantly written, clever in its puzzle design, and demonstrated just how fantastic the Source engine still is. I couldn't replace it.
The Witcher 2 is an unconventional, highly visceral, intelligently designed action-RPG with the most believable characters I've seen since Bioshock. I couldn't replace it.
And Skyrim? It's Oblivion, without the things that made Oblivion terrible. A unique setting, hundreds of hours of things to do, and the most stable product Bethesda has ever released (by now (20-ish hours of gameplay), Oblivion had crashed 5-10 times. Don't get me started on Fallout 3. Skyrim has yet to crash.)
These 3 games, no matter how much times change, are ones I will come back to, long after release. And that is what GOTY means to me.
I'm not saying MP games can't be great, just that they depend entirely on the community. And once servers go down, playing them becomes a challenge, unless they're popular enough to inspire hordes of fan-based servers.

Re: Game of the Year?
Lucas's (not me, actual Lucas) vote is Lego Pirates of the Carribean. More time running into a corner jumping and attacking the boundary that restricts his virtual freedom. Or maybe he's just jumping in the corner and watching the blacksmith drink rum. I don't why he finds that so funny.

Re: Game of the Year?
Combine Skyrim with BF3's MP - perfection! Let us play mobs or heroes or whatever in massive battles, people throwing spells and axes every which way, trebuchets and catapults, dragons and all kinds of shit.
In my opinion:
NPC's = boring.
Stories in videogames = irrelevant and more often than not bad/laughable.
The story should never be the main focus of a game, that's when it goes from being a game to an interactive story. So let's focus on awesome MP gameplay instead!

Re: Game of the Year?
Haven't played all these games you guys are mentioning but from what I have played and what I know of them my GOTY list would have to be:
Portal 2: Probably number 1 on the list. Loved it, puzzles were fun without frustration, and as biggles put it "brilliantly written". I thought it was genuinely fucking hilarious. Gotta love Wheatley.
Mortal Kombat: Best single-player in a fighting game I have ever played, and is fun for everyone, wether hard core fighter or casual noob like myself. Anyone can go online and have fun.
Battlefield 3: Its a lot of fun on the consoles, but on the PC it looks amaaaazing. We all know why this game is on this list so moving on.
Dead Space 2: While not as good as the original IMO, DS2 had amazing atmosphere, great gameplay, and i loved the guns/RIGs. Lots of action, altho i prefer the horror focus in the first.
Biggest letdown for me was Deus Ex: HR. It started out fantastic but for some reason it just got really stale for me as i went on.
Games I havent played that Im sure would be or will be on the list if/when i play them.
Skyrim: Despite not liking bethesdas previous elder scrolls or fallout games, this one looks really really good to me. Magic combat looks like a lot of fun and I like the dragon/dragonshout mechanic a lot. Looks great.
Uncharted 3: I loved U2 sooo much. This looks every bit as good as far a single player, and from what ive heard the MP is a lot of fun as well, although i personally didnt like the beta as much as UC2 mp. But singleplayer alone will probably be worth it.
Dark Souls: Despite not knowing wether or not I want to put up with the challenge again, i can not deny that this game looks great. Challenging and precise combat, along with unique mutliplayer options make it a win in my book. And the bosses
